It is now clear to me my use of the terms "expendient" and "wishful thinking" are in error, as if to say you simply have decided to believe in God because it feels good. I sincerely did not mean to put it that way at all, and so I apologise. Perhaps I have missed something in your explanation of your beliefs. I haven't had the chance yet, but I will try to get around to the other threads to reread your position on the matter. One thing is sure. Had I wanted to offend you, I simply would have done it. So please believe me when I say I did not write the terms "expedient" and "wishful thinking" with the same abrasiveness in mind as when they are typically used. I meant them in an ultimate sense. When you say I think that believing in God is better because it establishes a basis for believing that human values are reflected in the cosmos... rather than the ultimate truth being the Abyss , and other such things, it seems from my vantagepoint to mean you would rather believe in God because the belief gives meaning, contrary to belief in the Abyss. It therefore seems that knowledge of God and of His existence are not the critical issues for you, but rather that belief in Him adds consistency and a sort of completion to your perceptions of the Cosmos. Here God appears to me Something useful so that one might escape the Abyss. Well...I weary of the thing. As I said, I will try to see how it is this God of yours is better than the Abyss. *** Haven't seen any films lately. I'm beginning to sicken of them again. Do you have any recommendations for films of the calibre of, say, "Babette's Feast?" Or perhaps a film that is good, but a little quirky-- like "Life is Beautiful?" The last film I saw was "What Dreams May Come." A Robin Williams fan recommended it as an example of Robin Williams at his worst (I had expressed surprised that Williams could even act). Well, the film was too atrocious for words. Films ought not be so awful that their viewers are embarrassed to admit they've seen them. (I think I should try and make a film to see how difficult it is. It has to be a wonderfully difficult thing to do.) (nite)
