hey tc and all, i wanted to share some more on the subject of zonealarm and blackice defender. zonealarm looks like a great product but maybe it's still a little unstable in its beta form. here's a quote from steve gibson of the 'shields up' site:" FREE Firewall ZoneAlarm 2.0 Has Been Released! My fingers are crossed, the dust is still settling and the paint is still wet. It's too early to tell for sure, but it looks like Zone Alarm 2.0 (ZA) will be the PERFECT and ULTIMATE PERSONAL FIREWALL for the typical Internet user! And it's 100% free for the individual user! I am using it right now ? and NOTHING ELSE! ? on my personal system, and so far I love it! I think ZA combines the best of ALL worlds and eclipses every other firewall ever created. I hope to review it soon, but I will wait until the product stabilizes so I can give it my full endorsement without reservations. In the meantime I recommend that you first read through the "ZoneAlarm 2.0.xx Status" page I've created to track ZA's progress during it's first confrontation with the "Real World". Then grab a free copy from ZoneLabs, and share your feelings and experiences with everyone else over on the ShieldsUP! forum here on this site!" grc.com all in all, that sounds like quite a fine endorsement to me. additionally, in the march 7th issue of pcmagazine (i can't find this particular piece online yet) there's a column starting on page 74 titled 'second looks... net danger ahead?' i'll quote in part here:"because blackice looks only for inbound attacks, the program can't protect your system from attacks that start from within your pc. a common example is a trojan horse program that looks innocent-but actually steals information (such as passwords) and transmits it via the internet. a new program, zone lab's zonealarm2.0 (still in beta), claims to address this problem by controlling how individual applications on your pc access the internet. watch for a complete review in an upcoming issue." the article mentions that blackice received a pcmag technical excellence award in dec '99. also says that no single product addresses all of the security threats posed by the internet. they refer to symantec's entry into firewall technology (norton internet security 2000) as "powerful, understandable and accessible to the average user" zdnet.com i suggest that anyone interested in this subject visit gibson's site. grc.com imo, he's a legitimate leader in this field and no one else is doing what he is, as far as offering their knowledge to the public. check into his newsletter (he just started it) and all his tutorials, and check your system at his site while you're at it. :) mark
