Matthew 16:13-20 Peter's Confession

This is told also in Mark 8:27-29 and Luke 9:18-20. It had been some three years since Peter had first accepted Jesus as the Messiah (John 1:41,42). Called him "Lord," a year later (Luke 5:8.) Half a year later he called him "The Holy One of God" (John 6:68, 60). Now after two and a half years of association with Jesus he expresses his conviction in the Deity of Jesus.

The "Rock" (18), on which Christ would build his church, is not Peter, but the truth to which Peter confessed, that Jesus is The Son of God. The deity of Jesus is the foundation on which the Church rests, the fundamental creed of Christendom. This is the unmistakable meaning of the language.

-- Thank You so very much. This was a conflict of mine that has finally been resolved.

The 4 P's

.It was our purpose to establish a church in which the true gospel could be freely given forth and in which all the teaching and preaching would be Spirit-centered for power, Christ-centered for perfection, missionary-centered for purpose, and Bible-centered for permanence.

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
