Korea's First White LED Developed

Korea's first white LED (light-emitting diode), a new type of lighting source which generates light from semi-conductors and could take the place of conventional lighting equipment, has been developed by Professor Park Seongju. A professor of materials science at Kwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Park said Friday that he came up with the country's first-ever white LED by using gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors and white phosphor. The two other types of LED which have been successfully commercialized to date, blue and red, are commonly used in computers and for signs in buildings, but Park said only a few firms in the world have recently been able to develop white LED. He added that his version of white LED was based on a multiple quantum well system.

According to Park, if all existing lighting equipment in Korea were replaced with white LED, the country would be able to save W3.5 trillion annually. Park estimates that the international white LED market is worth US$1.3 billion annually.
