John, thanks for the summary. A few clarifications:

<Willimette's Tehama 870 chipset uses RDRAM only>

I think you mixed up the names a little here. Tehama is not 870. Rather, 870 is a separate chipset. You see, Intel already announced the 870 server chipset for McKinley (IA-64) and Foster (IA-32), and that chipset will support both DDR SDRAM and RDRAM. (I happen to work on 870; I should know.)

I do believe Tehama is an RDRAM-only chipset, and that RDRAM is an almost perfect match for the ultra high-speed Willamette processor.

<DDR only in servers; no DDR in desktops>

I sure hope this is true and not just anti-DDR FUD. I'm sure DDR will make it into some desktops thanks to AMD and their goal to be the "un-Intel."

On the other hand, the transition of Timna from SDRAM to RDRAM will mark a MAJOR milestone for mainstream acceptance of RDRAM. Although the transition isn't a 100% guarantee (what is a 100% guarantee in life, anyway?), it will definitely be a goal that Intel and Rambus will shoot for.

They also said 10 million RDRAMs will be shipped this quarter.
