Do you allocate manpower to provide hand holding to millions of technical illiterate folks out there?

BTW, they said their biggest installation problems have come from customers who attempted to "help" do the install.

Your contract relationship with a dial up isp starts after you already have your modem working.

How many uncounted man hours did that take? Tons. But they were the users man hours- not the ISP's.

With optimum online your contract relationship begins when you buy the modem - before you get it working. If I just spent $200 on a new cable modem and couldn't get it working, I'd call the tech support immediately. If I had to wait on hold for an hour and then received lame advice or was told the current backlog for field support was two months I'd be livid.

Now multiply that by 1 million. Chaos, and not constructive.

I've heard plenty enough stories about AOL mailing people free DSL modems at the slightest interest.

Here is the Aol Plus (DSL) offer:

For just $149, AOL will send you a complete installation kit containing a DSL modem, installation kit, the all-new AOL Plus software, and an easy to follow Quick Start Guide, and your $25 manufacturer's mail-in rebate form - everything you need to get started! Additionally, a one-time, non-refundable DSL line activation fee of $99 will apply.

By the way, AT$T@Home is now cold calling residence in my area.
