The line pushed by many 'pundits' is that GSM is initially easier and cheaper to deploy than CDMA. For example...

Your comments and engineers give pause for thought (which is the reason I read tthis thread).

As far as China is concerned which technology initially predominates will be driven by politics. The Chinese are angling for a deal - US or European taxpayers will pay, depending on who offers the better subsidy.
