Butterfly

I always liked the French word
papillon- it seemed to float
off at the end
On a small breeze of its own creation.
You hear it flutter and fade.

So I looked to see
What the Germans did.
They spit it- Schmetterling
Butterflies wearing heavy boots.
Pinned to the ground with consonants.

The operatic Italians roll it-farfalla,
A bel canto aria,
lifting it at the last minute
And wafting it up and away.

But English is my favorite-
most picturesque of all-
Butterfly.
