USinternetworking Launches Storage Area Network Service
TheStreet.com is First Customer to Rely on EMC-Proven USiSAN for Hot Site Recovery
ANNAPOLIS, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 2000-- USinternetworking, Inc. (Nasdaq:USIX - news), the leading Application Service Provider (ASP), today launched the USiSAN(SM) (Storage Area Network), providing wide area networked storage that will maximize uptime for online companies. Powered by EMC Enterprise Storage systems, networks and software, USiSAN is the storage core of the USi Global Services Platform(SM) (USiGSP).

The delivery of USiSAN marks the first time an ASP offers companies high reliability, performance, security and failover capability using external storage for mission critical systems. Traditionally, businesses had to provide, maintain and connect mission critical system storage locally to achieve these requirements. In addition, USi's emphasis on providing security through both technical and policy measures ensures that clients realize security gains beyond what they might otherwise attain with in-house maintenance of the infrastructure for these systems.

USi's first implementation of USiSAN is a complex disaster recovery solution for TheStreet.com incorporating a web site and publishing failover system that delivers unprecedented performance, virtually eliminating unplanned downtime. The USi solution for TheStreet.com integrates EMC Enterprise Storage Network (ESN) technology with servers from Sun Microsystems, database software from Oracle and Quest, VPN technology from Network Alchemy and USi-developed replication and process automation software. ESNs consolidate distributed information from departments and business units throughout the enterprise into a single, easily managed, centralized information infrastructure. USi replicates TheStreet.com's production data in real-time to the USi data center and TheStreet.com's servers at USi are attached to USi's EMC-based USiSAN.

''USiSAN delivers sub-second database replication for a complete site failover for TheStreet.com's mission critical multi-tier web, application and database architecture in under five minutes, with no loss of transactions or web content,'' said Christopher R. McCleary, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of USi. ''Subscribers are automatically and transparently redirected to the alternate USi site when it's necessary. EMC technology has been a key component of our technological infrastructure and we are proud to partner with this storage leader to deliver this groundbreaking ASP capability.''

EMC recently qualified USi for the EMC Proven E-Infostructure program. The Internet infrastructure program defines the highest standards for information availability, scalability and management. ''As a leader among the new breed of companies shaping the information economy, USi is in the business of information,'' said Mark Ward, EMC's Vice President of Global Marketing. ''To these companies, nothing is more strategically important than their investment decisions around information infrastructure. By implementing an EMC Enterprise Storage Network as the foundation around which it manages and protects its customers' most valuable resource, USi can assure its customers of the highest levels of information availability and integrity. ''

''We selected USi to provide site mirroring as a result of their mission-critical infrastructure and demonstrated performance, which are absolutely critical to our success,'' said David Willen, Chief Technical Officer of TheStreet.com.

USi iMAP(SM) clients receive integrated packaged application software, implementation, computing hardware, ongoing network services, hosting and client care service - all for a flat monthly fee that eliminates large up-front capital expenditures. The USiSAN capability brings clients new flexibility for high quality infrastructure and remote storage. By providing replication for database and flat files, geographically distributed load balancing, fast time-to-benefit, high quality of service and lower cost than traditional implementation methods, USi is building the foundation for companies that ultimately will need dual primary systems.
