If the integrity of the culture matters also, in such matters as respect for the law and a sense of honor, then it is a strength of this nation that it has continued to pursue this matter, not a weakness. Just this past week, in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, there were 5 shootings, a couple of them fatal, related to the theft of Eddie Bauer coats. There are kids growing up without conscience or a sense of solidarity with their fellow citizens, much less the human race generally. Combating the breakdown of norms in our society is confronting one of our really big problems. We cannot have a sociopath lead the country without repercussions.
