Intel has to look after their cutomers, or they don't sell product. Demand versus supply of RDRAM is very high - thus high prices. Before prices come down, Intel cannot disable Timna by making it only use expensive RDRAM.

The SDRAM support is there only as a stop gap to cheaper Rambus parts. It will popularise the platform thus helping RDRAM further down the road.

Meanwhile RDRAM sells at high prices, giving Rambus Inc a higher revenue per part than might have been predicted.
