Fred: thanks for your thoughtful post. It's always good to consider the big picture. I didn't mean to lightly diminish EMC, only to suggest that there is room for more than one player in this exploding market.

I believe that the enterprise computing vendors must take a strong stance in storage. The market size may soon exceed that of the server market, so they need to get in there and start learning the ropes. This is going to involve "floundering." Sun has floundered, too, and I wouldn't rule that company out, either. This space is going to be fun to watch.

Our research with customers shows HWP storage has especially strong appeal for Web data centers because of the 27x7x365, online reconfig, etc.

"I think HWP is a raging buy, but not because of its storage."

Then why is it a "raging buy" at a historically high P/E of almost 45, near it's all-time high stock price, and with narrowing profit margins?

"Look at Agilent and how much money that alone will generate. "

How will Agilent generate money for HP? HP will not receive any funds for the Agilent stock that is distributed to shareholders.

I'm long HWP, but I don't see it as a "raging buy" at this time. Please elaborate as to why you do.

Laszlo

Fred,

Again, we generally agree. I very much enjoyed the pop in EMC when that deal was dissolved. (Hmmm, I've actually enjoyed just about everything about my EMC experience...)

There are two real high-class players in storage. EMC and IBM. Everybody else needs one or the other as a supplier and most OEMS have naturally favored not giving the business to a competitor.
