Normally the high momentum leadership gets hit late in an overall market decline and then the beaten up value and other stocks can embark on another leg up.

In 1998 CSCO, DELL, LU, YHoo AMZN which were some of the real cream of the market at that point held up well during the July to AUg 31st 1998 low and then fell dramatically in early Oct into the Oct 8th low.

CSCO, DELL, LU all collapsed to below the 200 dma , in Dell's case spending only a few days below it.

Cramer infamously sold his dell near 40 on Oct 8th 1998.

The day of his crash call.

YHOO and AMZN came back towards their 200 dma while staying above it and made higher lows on the OCT sell off compared to the Aug 31st mkt selloff and this was a leading indication that they would be big time outperformers in the ensuing year.
