I'd say it was more a change in circumstances than a change in their position.

Due to 820/840 delays and low RDRAM yield, there was a distinct probability that AMD/Via could get an advantage on Intel if Intel did not support those other technologies.

This paved the way for Intel to keep their customers and give them the opportunity to lead the market to RDRAM. Imagine if Dell and others had gone the way of Gateway, due to lack of product from Intel. Intel was intelligent and flexible enough to give a little, thus ensuring long term success for themselves and Rambus.
