VALUE BOOST
Mr. Houghton pointed out that JDS Uniphase customers include a cluster of competitive companies in the networking sector, including Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT), Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), Ciena (Nasdaq: CIEN), Alcatel (NYSE: ALA), Pirelli (OTC: PIREY), and Corning (NYSE: GLW).

Indeed, both Lucent and Nortel have recently announced plans to outsource the manufacturing of many of the fiber-optic component parts. Such news boosts the intrinsic value of JDS, which many analysts consider the leader in a small field of competitors including Electro Scientific (Nasdaq: ESIO at $55), GSI Lumonics (Nasdaq: GSLI only $23), SDL (Nasdaq: SDLI at $400), Veeco Instruments (Nasdaq: VECO at $73 ), and Newport (Nasdaq: NEWP at $124).

In fact, JDS's new heft has some analysts wondering whether any of those competitors might now appear on its monitor as take-over targets.
