Should the states' rights position on this be that the recognition of gay marriage is a matter reserved for decision by the individual states, or even municipalities. Thus, if Clemson, South Carolina, for example, decided to accept gay marriage, that is up to its good citizens.

Probably whatever the deepest pocketed gay PAC groups position is. Until he is elected. Then, even if the Democrats control both houses of congress and the Presidency, (like they did countless times in the past) the position will change and he will be portrayed as a victim of a "vast right wing conspiracy" by the press.

I guess the gay rights groups never heard of that old saying. "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me".
