Re: "Gary, >Is this Chen out of his mind ?
Either he or the Register is."

I think he must have been taken out of context because nobody could have made that dumb a statement. Intel is building and buying everything in sight and they must be pretty convinced they need the capacity and it will be profitable. Just who else has the money and the process technology to do it? As for VIA, sure they don't have to put out the capitol to build the fabs and develop the technology but somebody does and they aren't going to give it away for free. VIA has to split the profits with somebody. Fabless is for bit players. Always has been and always will be.

Tony - <Either he or the Register is. Like to hear from PB, Paul, etc. on this one [Intel going fabless?].

Intel is not going to go fabless.

Intel IS a Silicon house.

Intel just bought a fab in Colorado, and has indicated it would be willing to buy other fab space in the near term.

Not having the fab and design teams in conjunction when one is waging an MHz war would not be optimum.

Witness the Coppermine. All the smart money indicated that the PPRO core could not be scaled past 850MHz or so.

It is a combination of design and process optimizations that continue to allow the Coppermine to scale =>1GHz. For example, the bulk of this work was performed by respective process and design teams that report to the same Technology Director, and who's respective desks reside 1 floor apart. I, as Process Boy, could be at Design Boy's [or Girl's] desk in two minutes.

There are many reasons why Intel would resist going fabless. The above is just one illustration.
