blan,

That was a very insightful post. There's no question in my mind that Microsoft's history would be rewritten if it had to do it all over again today. Of course, the Justice Department wouldn't wait as long to pounce the second time around either!

janet,

I feel like I'm usually one of the first to encourage people to post their ideas when they feel hesitant. This time I intentionally waited to let others speak first.

The one thing I would like to add is that as much as we think we would learn from your research, I think you'll learn more about how to approach your next research project if you let the folks here disect your stuff on ELON. Though it's an exacting crowd, it's a congenial crowd. We'll be nice. And much to Frank's chagrine, I'll even throw in a little humor. :)

The following is taken from the Raging Bull ELON thread. The address is: ragingbull.com

The information in it appears rather interesting from a relationships with ELON point of view. The message starts here:

ANCHOR POST......This was posted by our Mr. C. and it gives a rundown of the corporate "ties" to ELON. Thanks Again Mark C. I saved this! Merylee

TIES CRUCIAL

Sony, the world`s second-largest consumer electronics maker after Matsushita Electric Industrial CoLtd , has been active in forming ties with other firms in the area of digital networking.

It will jointly develop with Sun Microsystems Inc (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news) technology that allows home appliances, digital video and audio equipment to be connected to the Internet.

It has also agreed with Microsoft Corp (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news), IBM (NYSE:IBM - news) and
others to cooperate on their respective electronic music distribution technologies, while having forged several licencing agreements with companies adopting the MemoryStick platform.

By licencing Memory Stick technology to other makers, Sony wants to popularise the device to avoid a repetition of its Betamax fiasco, an unsuccessful rival to the dominant VHS video format.

``You cannot develop anything under this digital network era without forming alliances,`` said Motoharu Sone, an analyst at Universal Securities.

``The one between Sony and Intel should be open, and the point is who else will join in the camp,``he added. ``That`s the key to winning a defacto standard in this digital network business.``http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/000217/g6.html

Now lets look at the ties that are being formed and how they may relate in a very big way to ELON
#1 Ken Oshman CEO of ELON sits on the board of directors of SUNW
#2 ELON sits on MSFT`s UPnP steering committee
#3 Arthur Rock. I don`t think I would be exaggerating if I say that today`s Silicon Valley owes it`s very existence to Mr. Arthur Rock. It was his money that helped start many, many Silicon Valley companies, including the microprocessor behemoth the whole world today knows as Intel, Corporation. He has been a director of Intel since its very founding, and is still today, the Chairman of the Executive Committee and the lead Director of the Board of Directors of Intel. Mr. Rock sits on the Board of Echelon!

#4 IBM ties? Ken Oshman, the Founder and President of Echelon. He along with the other Echelon director, Mr. Robert Maxfield both went to work for IBM after they sold Rolm, the company which they co-founded, to International Business Machines. Therefore, they both have very close ties to IBM dating back more than 15 years.

#5 CSCO has codeveloped and per their agreement cobranded the iLON server and will be
marketing it once it recieves ansi approval.

#6 Honeywell has adopted Lonworks for their controls. Honeywell is a conglomerate across many industries,I believe they waited to see who would win the battle before committing themselves to ELON. There must be a tremendous cost involved in designing a whole new set of controls and then planning the marketing of them through their pipeline yet they have made that commitment.

#7 Back to SONY and Japan, Lets not forget the adoption of Lonworks by NTT Data of JAPAN. The largest infomation technologies company in the country

#7 The adoption of Lonworks as the standard in Finland for home networking. I think there`s a small Cellular phone company there that may end up using Lonworks since it is now the countries standard. Seems like a possibility to me.

When I consider the above and add the multitude of major players that already have adopted Lonworks I find it hard to believe their could be another player out there that could come out with a competing system and get it standardized and develop the partnerships necessary to overcome Echelons lead in the home, control, and device networking markets. They seem to have permiated the industry even before it has been developed. I grant you the above makes some assumptions but they assumptions based on facts. Anyone have any opinions ? tia, MarkC
