You forgot the magic of compounding. The quarter to quarter increase was (9050.9/8900.6 - 1) = 0.0169 as you correctly pointed out. Compounded over four quarters, this gives an annual rate of (1.0169**4 -1)*100% = 6.9%

Peter, all i know is that GDP is anyway over-reported due to the chained dollars trick. take out the hedonic pricing and GDP growth is cut in half.
the difference between your and their calculation is inexplicable to me...i suggest you send an e-mail to the BLS and ask them.
