Hi janet

Re carrier I was told that they are planning to introduce a LON unit. Tomorrow I will try to confirm that with someone at carrier.

Carrier is the #1 maker of hvac units so there coming on board is a defining moment.

However keep in mind carrier has their own proprietary system called CCN. It is not compatible with any other system. They took this approach to differentiate themselves from other unit manufacturers but also to lock out the honeywells of the industry. They felt and rightly so, what could be better then having your own automation system built right into your own equipment. No one could bid against them. Same thing at Trane. Trane has come much further with their Tracer system then carrier. Trane coming on board would be a definning moment also. They both have huge investments in their systems that was suppose to give them proprietary advandages in the plan and spec bidding world. It will be interesting to see If and when they open up their systems. I think they will eventually have no choice. Owners don't want to be held hostage to one single manufacturer.
Once they start being excluded from specs due to lack of open protocol they will cave.

As far as interfacing open protocols with non open portocols is concerned, that has been the holy grail for a long time. If you could go onto a campus and install your new open protocol front end system that would control and communicate to all the different existing systems without having to repalce and modify them, then you have found the golden goose. I have not seen it nor do I think Lon will be able to do it. I would have to see it to believe it.
However that doesn't lessen the huge potential for elon in the least. It just means owners will have to spend more to upgrade which translates into putting it off as long as possible. Hope this helps a little.
