Obviously the participation of Intel means that this new technology may have credibility at some point, even if it is too early to tell right now. CF, however, has reached a stage of development where it has a steadily expanding market. For a totally new technology to be successful, it would have to be (1) cheaper by a factor of at least two or three, (2) faster, and (3) capable of much greater storage capacity than existing technology.

For comparison purposes, consider how long it has taken for fiber optic lines to replace twisted wire. There is no question that fiber optic is cheaper, allows much faster baud rates, and has a capacity thousands of times greater than twisted wire. Fiber optics has been a viable technology for more than 10 years.
