Jack,
The iPaq comes legacy free starting at $499, or with legacy starting at $549. Check it out:
directplus.compaq.com

The HP folks are dictating to corporates for some reason. Compaq is letting corporations make their own decision.

Your memory is getting bad, and you are resisting change. A sure sign of old age.<G>

Jack - re: a mix of legacy/non-legacy may well be a requirement
HP just took one of their standard legacy boxes and repackaged it - the only way they could get a product to market in time. They got caught flat-footed in October with the iPaq announcement and since they do not have much capability to do rapid product development - their cycles are typically 12 to 18 months - this was all they had.

iPaq covers that market for an additional $50. The full benefits of W2K in a legacy free product are not realized if there are legacy ports present, but if there are users who think they need those ports, they can buy the iPaq which has those ports, and still get compatibility with the rest of the iPaq line (as well as with their portable peripherals if they have CPQ portables).

The fact that IBM and HP have both rushed "me-too" products to market shows that they believe corporate customers will go for the concept. They are hoping that most buyers are not savvy enough to understand why the legacy-free iPaq is really the best, and their offerings at least allow them to compete with the "legacy-lite" iPaq version.
