I have something very close to that setup. A Win2K machine, a linux box, a laptop and a couple of other desktops running Win98 that use Linux for a file server (although the MS machines can also see each other and share files directly).

The way I did it was:

a) My linux box is pure linux, M$ free, no Win98 needed.
b) I used red-hat 6.2 but I think they're probably all pretty similar, but JC knows more about that. And they're all cheap, between $40-$80; I hope your stocks aren't so old-economy that you can perceive that difference. (If they are, then this week you're going back to CP/M and dog food.)
c) I can't imagine a Linux distribution coming without Samba, the program you need to make Linux an M$ net client and/or server. Red Hat has it but I'm sure they all do. Samba is a good program. Bit of a pain to set up.

jc, up and running with w2k on my new hp.

What, you got it free with a new Ford? Hey, don't be spending my microbrew money!

What should I do?

Okay, I'm thinkin' Mandrake 7.0 Linux here. You can get it for .99 cents at LinuxMall.com. I've got some questions first, though.

What kinda PC is it?

How big is the HD?

What did you primarily use the Win98 machine for?

Okay okay, #3 was partly a trick question. Why though did you need a new PC? Are you addicted to M$ upgrades? You don't need to answer that. Although you should bring it up in the confessional with your Priest.

Hmmm... there's a grant idea; a 12 step program for M$ upgrade addicts.

I'll check on that vid card.
