Freedom Of Speech In Russia
By Francesca Mereu

At the end of the 1999, Itogi magazine ran an article titled "The Sunset of Journalism," accusing Russian mass media of having "stopped dealing with information and started working as pure public relations of the lowest kind."

Lyudmila Resnyanskaya, journalism professor at Moscow State University and a specialist on Russian media, said the Russian mass media system, due mainly to its economic status, has changed since 1993. The print media had only a few readers who could afford to buy a paper or pay a subscription. So they were forced to accept financial aid.

From 1992-1993, the first media owners appeared. These people were mainly in the banking business and linked to a specific political establishment ? that of Boris Yeltsin. For them, information meant only "support" for their business.
