Re: W2K and Linux

Check out vmware.com which lets you run multiple 'virtual machines' which themselves run Win2K, WinNT, Win98, Win95, or Linux under either W2K or Linux as the root boot OS. Amazing program which appears to do what the VM OS on IBM mainframes has done for decades.

Whatever. I guess it's better that you should spend that money on a new W2K PC than lose it in the stock market betting on old-timey stocks.

Okay here's the thing- you've got the best 'old' PC I've ever *heard of. You could even run x86 Solaris, which is free, plus the cost of the media, plus the cost of shipping, plus the cost of some guy driving the media to the shipping place.

I read where Abit is going to come out with their own damn Linux especially tweaked for Abit MBs. That's cool, because once they do, you should be able to insert that custom kernel on your Linux PC and be one dialed-in Linux geek mofo.

The Mandrake Linux is able to interop with your Win98 partition out of the box. Also, it's an easy install (easier than Windows) and offers a broad spectrum of X Window Manager GUI crap so you could change Linux to suit your mood (and you *are moody).

I thought I saw a boxed version of Mandrake 7.0 (with the safety seal) for like $20 in the mall. You might want to call the computer software places and find out. I'm pretty sure that's right, and the two important components of that deal are that you get a BOOK and you get a version of Partition Magic which is the single best piece of Windows software ever made. PM (and boot magic) will be of great use to your want of dual booting Linux/Win98. And you *do want to dual boot because I understand W2K may not work with all your programs. OTOH, if all you have are .gifs and .jpegs and erotic stories. you should be okay.

With regard to compression, you'll need to contact an actual geek. I'm just an enthusiast. I think you need to uncompress your data. It's likely that you need to uncompress your HD, back up the data, format the HD, re-install Win98 (it wants to be first) and PM, repartition, then install Linux.

You might want to check and see if any Linux User Groups in your area are having any installfests planned. That's a good way to go because unless you're really lucky (and there's no evidence of that) you'll run into a problem somewhere where a Linux geek would be quite handy to have around (particularly to do with networking). I'm thinking that a NY installfest might be different from a California one. In NY they probably have like Slackware 4.0 and they'll say "Ey! You want it - you don't."

How will I see linux from my REAL system (w2k) ? <g>

If you install Samba correctly, you WON'T. It'll all look like W2K to you from your W2K system. You can pretend it's all from Redmond. Isn't that cool? There goes the Network Neighborhood! <g>
