God is as complex as the nature we see around us.

"my consternation begins in believing such a God to be punishing." ...

oh boy (a long and very interesting subject!)! And I wanted to go weed! Lol!

I think the 'simplist' way I have of discussing this...

a) God rarely 'punishes' .. we tend to punish ourselves and let others 'punish' us. We make our own choices in life. God respects all of our choices.
b) Sickness, disasters etc.. are not from God. And sometimes things 'just happen'.. why I don't know why - Tis 'life'.. When we get to heaven we will have much to ask and learn I am sure.
b) I am firmly convinced that most of God's 'punishment' will be to let us understand and feel exactly what we did to hurt someone or something else. This will be punishment enough. So harsh in fact.. that His mercy and love will be necessary to console us afterwords.

Voltman, I have a very rudamentary question please. When you refer to the shares of stock as a vehicle, is that similar to let's say, a landowner who rents his property?
He rents his property out, derives income from it, and is not so concerned about the swings in value?

Thanks D.H.

Is the nature of our universe such that any entity, even one with power over all it surveys, could control it enough to design or predict it's outcome?
