Chip Equipment Makers Up; Likely Pft Gains

TOKYO -- Shares of leading Japanese makers of semiconductor production equipment are higher early Monday after the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that these companies should see substantial increases in group net profits for the fiscal year starting in April.

At 0020 GMT (7:20 p.m. EST Sunday), shares of Nikon Corp. (J.NIK or 7731) were up Y130, or 3.3%, at Y4,020, shares of Advantest Corp. (J.ADV or 6857) were up Y270, or 1.3%, at Y20,900, and shares of Tokyo Electron Ltd. (J.TKE or 8035) were up Y200, or 1.2%, at Y16,500.

Demand for microchips is growing due to the spread of cellular phones and other information terminals as well as growing computer use, said the Nihon Keizai Shimbun in its Monday morning edition.
