MADRID, Spain, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The pro forma revenues of Terra Networks, S.A. (Nasdaq: TRRA), the Internet subsidiary of Telefonica, S.A., increased by 50% in 1999 to EUR78.5m. In the second half of the year, growth rate was even stronger: 160%. At year-end, Terra had a total of 1,317,000 ISP clients, a rise of 423% in the year. In December, Terra's portals received 38 million visitors and delivered 434 million page-views, a 124% increase on December 1998. These figures are evidence of the success of the strategy followed by the Telefonica subsidiary and confirm its position as the leading Internet operator in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking markets, in just one year. To achieve this position of leader, in 1999 Terra invested heavily in the acquisition of companies that have been key to its development, such as Ole! In Spain, Zaz in Brazil or Infosel in Mexico, amongst many others. Terra also initiated a major marketing campaign -- a key factor in the positioning of both the brand and its range of products. Following these and other investments that were crucial to the capture of the large market share that Terra today enjoys, the company reports a pro forma negative EBIDTA of EUR86m on its balance sheet.
