Intel Corp. to Expand Its Mobile Phone Operations in Japan

Tokyo, Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp., the world's
largest chipmaker, will expand its mobile phone development
operations in Japan to benefit from the growing market for mobile
handheld devices capable of accessing the Internet.

Intel said today it will set up a center in Japan to develop
technologies used in a new generation of cellular mobile phones,
which will be able to tap into the Internet at high speed and even
download moving pictures such as movie previews and sports
highlights.

Intel will cooperate with Justsystem Corp., a developer of
personal computer software applications, Acces Co., a Japanese
computer network system integrator, and two other unidentified
companies.

Mitsubishi Electric Corp. shares rose 8.9 percent after the
Nikkei English News reported the mobile phone handset maker and
Intel Corp. plan an alliance involving cellular telephone
technology.

Intel will supply Mitsubishi with a microprocessor designed
to work with portable information terminals and with advanced
chips to be used in a cell phone base that's currently being
developed, the report said.

Intel (Japan) President Nobuyuki Denda would not comment on
any ``individual agreements with other companies.'

Mitsubishi share rose as much as 77 yen to 943 yen. They
finished the morning at 940 yen.
