I think the saving grace here is that Thunderbird will debut in socketed and slotted versions but that still makes the Spitfire ramp somewhat risky.

Risky in what way? Because of new motherboard requirement?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Slot to Socket convertors to smooth out the transition.
