Joe, Re; HDTV, browsers, erc.
At the low end an SVGA monitor is cheaper than a TV set of the same inches, in the 15-19" area. I have seen external boxes for cable in the $30 area and the gates box may have a cable jack as well as separate video audio and SVGA ports. With a fast CPU all that stuff comes cheaply. Since people view TV from a greater distance than they surf and they usually surf alone at reading distance this box will have the ability to fit into many niches at once and may surprise us all with it's sales. they may be able to include a cable modem as an optional item as well so it could be able to take a cable connection for surfing? Or they may have a network port to connect to ADSL or cable modem(on a cost base this is more likely).
If it had a printer port/USB port than it and a word processor it coulkd become a real student capable machine as many things could then be hung on it. Most stoonts have a TV and a computer....two costs...that could be rolled into one. Of course computers are cheap now anyway so they will not get all the biz, but a piece of it, a lot of pieces adds up to a large market.
