Swiss, more on DoCoMo for you: I may wait to see a pullback a bit due to this news - what's your take? JAPANESE GOVT TO EVALUATE CELL-PHONE NET ACCESS PROVIDERS TOKYO, Feb 28, 2000 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications will conduct on-site checks of four telecommunications companies that provide Internet access via cell phones next month, ministry officials announced Friday. The ministry hopes to improve the quality of such services in light of 13 disruptions since last autumn. NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc (TSE:9437), known as NTT DoCoMo; IDO Corp.; DDI Corp (TSE:9433); and the J-Phone group will be targets of the inspections. By probing these firms firsthand, the ministry hopes to set industry standards to prevent problems such as poor connectivity or disruptions in service. The ministry hopes to set standards during fiscal 2000 to increase consumer trust in cellular Internet services, which will be a foundation for electronic commerce. Inspectors will also check to see if the companies have back-up cables for peak-service periods and whether they have the equipment and technical ability to quickly return online after a disruption in service. Use of cellular Internet services is exploding, with NTT DoCoMo's i-Mode service alone signing up more than 4 million users a year. Technological standards and guidelines don't exist, however, which could damage the technology's credibility. NTT DoCoMo's and IDO's Internet service went down for several hours since last autumn.
