A Lot Of Q News> Qualcomm, Microsoft Plan Wireless Devices Venture NEW ORLEANS -- Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) plan to form a strategic alliance to develop advanced wireless devices with multimedia capabilities. In addition, Qualcomm entered an alliance with RF Micro Devices Inc. (RFMD) to provide power amplifiers for the CDMA market and unveiled third-generation CDMA wireless technology in its MSM5100 mobile station modem. Qualcomm and Microsoft will develop hardware reference designs for mobile devices, including smart phones, based on the Microsoft Mobile Explorer wireless communications platform and wireless Pocket PCs using Qualcomm CDMA technologies. The companies will collaborate on distribution of the reference designs, product trials and tools for content developers. In a press release Monday, Qualcomm said its agreement with RF Micro Devices will produce amplifiers for future Qualcomm CDMA chipsets. Qualcomm will market and sell the jointly developed power amplifiers and provide software and system development tools for manufacturers using the product. Qualcomm's MSM51000 Mobile Station Modem, which is based on the MSM3300 chipset, features data rates of up to 307 kilobits per second. Qualcomm also unveiled other products using third-generation technology, including the CSM5000 Cell Site Modem product for manufacturers, which supports the CDMA 1x Multi-Carier standard, and a complete test system for third-generation CDMA 1x Multi-Carrier networks. Qualcomm acquired the technology development group of U.K. handset design company TellIt Communications Ltd. for $20 million. TellIt's research and development operations, which has expertise in European radio frequency design for handsets including Nordic Mobile Telephone 450 technology, will become a unit of Qualcomm (UK) Ltd. Separately, Qualcomm said it entered a CDMA worldwide subscriber unit license agreement with Taiwan-based Compal Electronics Inc. (Q.CPE). Under the terms of the multi-million dollar, royalty-bearing agreement, Qualcomm has granted Compal Electronics a license to develop, make and sell subscriber unit products for CDMA wireless applications, including cellular, PCS and wireless local loop. In addition, Qualcomm unveiled the GSP-1620 satellite packet data modem for the Globalstar satellite communications system. The modem provides wireless data connections to remote locations. -Michael Squires; Dow Jones Newswires; 201-938-5400
