HOUSTON, Feb 28, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) has selected Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) to build a massive supercomputer that will be the largest in Europe. Based on the Compaq AlphaServer(TM) systems running the Tru64(TM) UNIX(R) operating system, the supercomputer will handle mammoth workloads at five trillion operations per second (five teraFLOPS), or seven times faster than existing supercomputers in Europe. To achieve this record-breaking speed, Compaq will harness the power of more than 2,500 Alpha(TM) processors, which are widely recognized as the fastest in the world. The French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) will use the supercomputer for simulation programs to ensure the reliability and safety of the French nuclear stockpile without new nuclear tests. Furthermore, this supercomputer will be made available to the wider scientific community for studies that complement the main mission of the machine, a part of the French development of the simulation program. "CEA's decision to choose Compaq underscores our leadership in 64-bit UNIX high-performance technical computing -- not only in performance, but also in scalability, upgradability and manageability," said Enrico Pesatori, Senior Vice President and Group General Manager of Compaq's Enterprise Solutions and Services Group." The speed of the Compaq AlphaServer supercomputer is unmatched. It can perform, in just one second, the work of 30,000 mathematicians working day and night for five years on their handheld calculators. To achieve this five teraFLOPs performance, Compaq will link together into a single system several of its supercomputers in the AlphaServer SC SuperComputer Series. The overall system will use a high-performance interconnection network, developed in collaboration with Compaq by Quadrics Supercomputers World, a subsidiary of the Italian company Finmeccanica. This supercomputer takes advantage of a great number of exclusive technological benefits linked to the Compaq Tru64 UNIX operating system. Functions such as Single System Image, Cluster File System and Parallel File System provide for simple and centralized administration, and together enable the operator to manage the supercomputer's immense capabilities productively. Start-up of the supercomputer will be handled by Compaq's Integration Center at Annecy, France. There, Compaq will undertake integration, installation, training of future users, technical assistance and maintenance. The computer will be fully operational by the end of 2001. This project underlines Compaq's technological leadership in the 64-bit UNIX high-performance technical computing business, and clearly demonstrates Compaq's ability to provide innovative solutions in the most critical environments.
