Nextel, Airtouch to carry wireless Microsoft

NEW ORLEANS, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Wireless telephone customers of carriers AirTouch Cellular and Nextel Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:NXTL - news) will be able to access Internet information from a special version of Microsoft Corp.'s (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) online service starting in April, the companies said on Monday.

Jumping ahead of America Online (NYSE:AOL - news), the No. 1 online service, the Redmond, Washington software giant said phone users would also be able to check e-mail from its free Hotmail service. Chairman Bill Gates was to unveil the new service, dubbed MSN Mobile 2.0, in a speech at the Cellular Telephone Industry Association show here later on Monday.

The second-generation wireless service will also include information from Microsoft's Web travel agency, Expedia.com. Starting in April, wireless phone users will be able to check flight status, itineraries and driving directions. Microsoft's wireless services allow subscribers to tailor what they see on their phones by visiting the Web site mobile.msn.com from their desktop computers to choose among various content options. AOL chairman Steve Case plans to discuss his company's wireless plans in a speech at the conference on Wednesday.

Airtouch Cellular is part of the recently merged Vodafone Airtouch Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L).

Software AG Forms Partnership With Microsoft

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (Reuters) - German system software provider Software AG (SOWG.DE) said Monday it had entered a strategic partnership with software giant Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) to enable users of the Windows operating system to run programs from traditional mainframe computers.

Software said its wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary, Software AG Inc., would bundle its enterprise integration technology with Microsoft's Host Integration Server 2000 to allow the server to run CICS, Natural, and other applications that would not normally work on Windows.

Enterprise integration technology is software that allows various computer systems to communicate with each other.

``(This) would thereby (build) a bridge from the Windows platform to non-Windows enterprise systems,' read a statement. 'The immediate benefit for Software AG and Microsoft customers is the ability to ``plug' any application from virtually any mainframe platform into applications running on a Windows NT server.'

Software said it and Microsoft would jointly sell, market, and service the product, which would come out by the third quarter, around the same time as the launch of the Host Integration Server.

Microsoft's Host Integration Server is designed to enable Windows NT-server customers to integrate their existing host applications with the Windows platform.

Software said the partnership would help its Walnut Creek, Calif., subsidiary gain more market visibility and sell more of its products in the United States.
