John, of course Microsoft can do Windows CE like the concept it is. Windows CE is nothing complicated like Win2K, and will probably be used for many funny things and work flawlessly.

But market leaders like Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson, Philips, Sony, Siemens, Bosch etc. would never give up their independence and base their total income on an operating system from Microsoft. Never.

I don't see Linux as something that can take over, but Symbian and Palm have some systems, and even those systems I can easily see having trouble competing with proprietary software.

What counts is usability and connectability. U.S. Robotics really showed how this could be done with the Palm Pilots, without buying any software from MS. MS software can do the same, but why pay for it?

By the way: I think Apple stocks are good and will become really good when OS X goes out!! It both appeals to new users, has a good image and is based on Unix/Linux technology.
