Americans expect Dems to divide people and pit group against group in order to advance their schemes and win. McCain is clearly running as the Dem in the Rep primaries. If it works, huge numbers are going to take a walk.

It's possible that McCain could underperform another AZ senator, a real legend, Barry Goldwater, who was running ahead of JFK in the Fall of 1963.

No, it never is. But isn't the bigger issue why the RR engenders fear and hostility among even some moderates? Do they go too far in their advocacy of what some view as government-legislated morality? Do their leaders welcome into their "big tent" some factions perceived to be intolerant of those who diagree with their religious views?
