Art, The Nikon Coolpix 800 is a sweet camera...

...with a silent autofocus, a smooth-as-silk zoom lens and a solid feel despite the plastic body. I took one for a test drive today at National Camera and Video. The sticker price is $599.99 plus tax (ouch).

It is selling for around $450.00 on-line and I think it is a great deal for someone looking to get a first digital camera with resolution in the 2.1 megapixel range.

I am still very happy with my Epson PhotoPC 850Z, but am thinking about the Nikon for my brother in Boston. I plan to give away my Epson as a gift to a relative as soon as an acceptable 3+ megapixel alternative comes along, perhaps the Nikon 990 or the big brother to the Olympus C2500.

Throw in a 96 MB SanDisk CF card while you're at it...
