Newbridge Award-Winning Broadband Wireless Solutions Gain Momentum As Customer Base Grows

Deployed at 60 customer sites worldwide

KANATA, Ontario, February 28, 2000 -- Broadband wireless industry leader Newbridge Networks today announced that its award-winning broadband wireless solutions are achieving wide-reaching acceptance throughout the world, as demonstrated by the increasing number of shipments to customers.

Revenue in the third quarter of fiscal year 2000 from the company's broadband access products more than doubled compared with the previous quarter and now represent approximately 15 percent of Newbridge revenues.

Newbridge broadband wireless solutions are being used globally by more than 60 customers, including Bell South International, Toshiba, BT Belgium, Telenordia, MaxLink, Home Telephone, Central Texas Telephone, Gateway Telecom, TriCorners Telecommunications and South Central Telecom.

Rob Gillan, Newbridge Vice President, Wireless Networks, said: "Newbridge customers are literally breaking down the barriers that until just recently existed in broadband access, and are able to respond quickly and cost-effectively to consumer demand for more services and bandwidth."

Gillan added: "Newbridge has been recognized as a leader in this space - both by customer wins and industry awards - because we have successfully leveraged our strong position in ATM, broadband access and service management technologies."

Acceptance of the Newbridge LMDS equipment has been accelerated by FCC certification of the equipment in the United States, as well as the endorsements of several industry luminaries.

For instance, Newbridge won the IEC 1999 InfoVision Award for end-to-end broadband wireless solutions, as well as Data Communications' Hot Product Award and the Frost & Sullivan Market Engineering Vendor Excellence Award for its leadership in LMDS broadband wireless development.

LMDS is a high-frequency broadband wireless system that can be quickly deployed to cost-effectively deliver data, high-speed Internet, voice, video and multimedia services using point-to-multipoint distribution systems. The Newbridge broadband wireless access solutions enable service providers to enter the telecommunications market quickly with a broad portfolio of premium quality services for business customers.

The comprehensive Newbridge broadband wireless solution for LMDS represents a multiservice network comprising base station and customer premises equipment. A base station, consisting of the Newbridge 350 IVSN, the industry's most scalable, flexible multi-access service platform, and point-to-multipoint transmitters and receivers, is the central location that collects and switches all customer traffic within a given wireless coverage area. It is also the linking point between the customer and the network backbone.

Customer premises equipment includes transceivers/antennae and flexible network interface units, which support a full range of services. The Newbridge network and services management solution manages both the wireless and wireline portions of the network, providing a range of billing, statistics and maintenance support.

Hello rr and Mike (from Florida) -- I have been enjoying your posts today.
There is no doubt that NN has some successful LMDS
and MMDS products -- But, after a rapid scan of their
"Leadership in Broadband Wireless Solutions" white paper and a brief review of their transceiver specifications,
I must question the wisdom of their apparent continued reliance on (obsolete) versions of modulation (EG QPSK), in those systems.

IMHO other systems which are now appearing on the scene,
using the varied versions of OFDM , will very soon make the
current NN systems obsolete -- primarily because of their
enhanced bandwidth, interference rejection characteristics, and potential for resolving the line-of-sight problem .
Then again, perhaps they are one of those forward thinking
companies who have joined the new OFDM Alliance.

The white paper (on page 4) BTW, refers to an Insight Research Corporation document "Fixed Wireless Options in
Telecom Networks 1999-2004".
While searching for this document, I just discovered a
very interesting "Index" which contains a link to that document. See gii.co.jp

And, Mike, sorry to see that you missed another fine New England
winter.

Best regards,
Mardy.
