Afternoon Edition, Monday, Feb. 28, 2000 America Online Inc. announced several new wireless relationships today, including deals with Nokia and Motorola to develop versions of the AOL Instant Messenger service for those companies' handheld wireless devices. Other AOL deals included an agreement with Arch Communications Group Inc. to provide two-way wireless messaging for the new AOL Mobile messenger service; a deal to deliver AOL Wireless content to Sprint PCS customers; and an agreement for BellSouth to carry the new AOL Mobile Messenger Service. FCC Chairman William Kennard told the opening general session of Wireless 2000 that spectrum management should be the wireless industry's top public policy priority, and stressed market-based solutions for dealing with it. Kennard said the creation of "secondary markets" for underused spectrum would bring buyers and sellers together and help head off any spectrum droughts, especially in the valuable range below 3 GHz. The chairman pointed to the upcoming auctions of television channels 60-69 as an opportunity for incumbent broadcasters to negotiate voluntarily with incoming licensees. Globalstar USA today announced the full commercial availability of its mobile satellite service in the United States. The company, a subsidiary of Vodafone Airtouch Plc., said it has nationwide coverage with international roaming set to begin next month. Sprint PCS says it is expanding its alliance with Internet service provider EarthLink to make the ISP's e-mail and select content available through the carrier's Wireless Web service. Ericsson this morning introduced a series of third-generation CDMA products designed to ease the transition to cdma2000 network architecture. The company says each of its five new products in the CMS 11 line is capable of supporting 3G services. The introductions include a radio base station, a mobile switching center, internetworking function, home location register and Wireless Application Protocol gateway. Ericsson also announced its A1228c, the company's first WAP-enabled CDMA phone; the phone offers access to the mobile Internet, e-mail and information and communications services. The vendor's A2218z is a palm-sized GSM phone with a WAP browser. SigmaOne Communications Group announced the development of its wireless location system for GSM carriers in the United States and Europe. The Sigma 5000 GSM network-based system is designed to operate as either a fully independent overlay or as a standardized T1P1-compliant location system. The Sigma 5000 will be available for commercial system deployment by first-quarter 2001. According to the firm, its system is designed to locate all GSM subscribers to better than 300 feet without requiring any modifications to existing handsets. InterVoice-Brite Inc. and German GSM carrier E-Plus will demonstrate a telephony and information services solution at this week's CeBIT 2000 in Hannover. The solution combines InterVoice-Brite technologies such as WAP compatibility, speech recognition and text-to-speech capabilities. Netcom Consultants, with offices in the U.K., Sweden, Singapore and Brazil, opened its new U.S. headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The office will support the company's operations and services throughout the Americas for its clients, including Ericsson and Globalstar. Klas Lundgren, former executive director of Netcom in Sweden, was named president of the U.S. office. Audiovox Communications Corp. introduced its CDM-8000, a new tri-mode, Web-browsing CDMA handset that supports AMPS and PCS frequencies. The phone will begin shipping in early April, with mass production scheduled to begin later that month. The new model comes equipped with a standard lithium-ion battery and has a vibra-alert option, menu-driven interface, caller ID, voice-mail service and short messaging service. Audiovox also unveiled the PCX-1100 single-mode CDMA PCS phone and the compact PCX-3600 CDMA phone. GTE Telecommunication Services Inc. today launched its voice-activated location-based information services. The solution combines speech recognition, text-to-speech technology, integrated database and dynamic, real-time traffic information from Voice Access Technologies Inc. The service is an intelligent network-based service bureau application residing on GTE TSI's NonStop Compaq platform. GTE TSI also said it will supply selected BellSouth markets with INPosition, the vendor's new wireless enhanced phase I 911 solution. Telcordia Technologies Inc. this morning announced the immediate availability of its enhanced local number portability software for wireless and competitive local exchange carriers. The Advanced Service Management System was modified to run on a Hewlett-Packard Co. Unix-based platform. The ASMS provides both major industry LNP functions: service order activation and local service management system.
