I've heard that the South African legislature may soon introduce a new set of mining laws. This law would limit the ownership of mining companies of ore reserves. The objective would be to end the predominantly "white" mining industry, and improve racial equality in the mining industry.

While this is a noble objective, the timing and way in which this is implemented would be crucial. The South African mining industry is no longer strictly a national industry. Many foreigners hold shares in these companies. If the legislature and government of South Africa enact laws that amount to nationalisation and redistribution of existing mining assets, this could ruin the investments of these foreign investors in the mining companies. That is a serious matter of concern.

Does anyone know more about this unfolding story?
