"Doodle" as near as I can tell came from medieval Low German "dudeln", as in "to fuck around". The German word for "bagpipe" is Dudelsack, and it is a little-known truth of language that this word had its roots in the rather apocryphal fact that wherever Germans and Scots met in the Dark Ages, it wasn't merely dark, but windy. "You're not supposed to blow in that end! But since you've started ... don't let me be a bad host!"
