"There You Go Again" John LeBoutillier Tuesday February 29, 2000 "There you go again." Remember how effectively Ronald Reagan used that line against President Jimmy Carter in their 1980 debate? Each and every time Carter distorted, lied or talked "around" one of his many failures, Dutch would shake his head and chastise Carter by sadly saying, "There you go again." Twenty years later we can use the same line ? only this time against an equally shameless and disingenuous candidate, John McCain. Yesterday?s attack by McCain on the Religious Right, specifically the Reverends Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, was yet another example of the McCain Game Plan: play to the media by attacking the GOP and conservatives. (McCain has been currying favor from the media inside D.C. for the last 15 years by doing this.) The result of this long-term strategy? McCain is the darling of the (liberal) Mainstream Media, but he cannot get Republican primary voters to vote for him. This vitriolic attack on two important religious leaders is guaranteed to earn McCain a spate of even more favorable stories. (Please remember that the media HATES Christian conservatives; they LOVE having a Republican do their dirty work for them.) McCain?s attack means two things are now more likely to happen: 1) The media has plenty of fresh ammo to use on George W. Bush all the way through November. They are going to take Bush and make him into the candidate of the bigots, the haters, the homophobes, the religious nuts?you name it. (None of this is true, by the way.) The GOP candidate who one year ago was touted as being "the most inclusive candidate" is now being margianalized into the candidate of the Far Right. And who did this? A consortium of McCain and the liberal media who spend all day on the bus or plane with him. Together they have evolved into a potent force against the Republican base ? and in support of John McCain. 2) The odds that McCain will go the third party route just increased. It is becoming quite clear that McCain wants to push Gore and the democrats into a jacket labeled "Louis Farrakhan and AL Sharpton" while at the same time sticking Bush with the label "Bob Jones, Falwell and Robertson." Then, having done that, McCain bolts the Republican Party (which does not really want him anyway), blasts both parties as being controlled by religious extremists and takes the Reform Party nod. He then runs "up the middle" of the political spectrum ? with huge media support. This scenario is becoming more likely by the minute. Other clues: McCain just announced that he will not participate in the California debate on Thursday night. This has to mean that he knows he cannot win the winner-take-all California primary next Tuesday. What does this tell us about McCain?s chances to win the GOP nomination? If he can?t win in California, Texas or Florida, how can he either win the nomination or the presidency as a Republican? (Keep in mind that in order for a Republican to win the presidency, he almost HAS to win California.) How can McCain win California in November as the GOP nominee if he cannot even get California REPUBLICANS to vote for him in the GOP primary? The answer is simple: McCain can?t cut it as a Republican. And he is figuring that out. That is why he is setting the stage to be "rejected" by the GOP ? and then, to the cheers of the Ted Koppels, Cokey Robertses and Dan Rathers, he will bolt the GOP and run with the Reform Party nomination, perhaps with Bob Kerry as his "centrist" running mate. Keep your eyes open to this evolving strategy. Also, we need to consider the "ego" of what McCain is going through. All day long he is being told how great he is, how he is the "savior" of our country and how "only he can rescue us from the Clinton/Gore era." McCain is in love with his image. He is getting a daily "rush" from the adulation. Losing the GOP nomination and returning to the Senate will not satisfy this "addiction." Nor would accepting the Veep slot. No, only running AGAINST everyone in the fall will keep McCain?s "high" rolling along. This possibility increases daily. newsmax.com
