Bob, I still need to check this...I'm going to look yet today and follow it tomorrow morning. Everything considered, I think ALA is doing great. In my experience this is not generally a stock that makes huge moves over a single trading session. That said, as long as US markets hold, I bet we see close to 50 tomorrow. FWIW, TEF (Spains Telefonica) sounds like they blew out earnings. I believe a CC expected to be quite bullish is taking place now. S&P upgrade in Brazil helps out too! FWIW, I think foreign telecoms and suppliers could see additional stability/boost as TEF's Latin America consolidation is completed over the next 30 days or so.

ABB Alstom Power Outlines Sweeping Restructuring Plan

Dow Jones Newswires -- February 29, 2000

PARIS -- Franco-Swiss power generation group ABB Alstom Power said it outlined a sweeping restructuring plan to employee representatives Tuesday, including the loss of 10,000 jobs worldwide.

In a statement, ABB Alstom Power said that 5,400 of the job losses would come in Europe, affecting "all the main European countries where the company has production facilities".

"Some 25 manufacturing sites worldwide may be affected by the proposed changes," the statement said.

ABB Alstom Power president and chief executive officer Claude Darmon said the restructuring is needed to "sustain the business long-term" and support a "drive for growth".

The restructuring program, which was outlined to union officials from 16 countries at a meeting in Brussels Tuesday, aims at cutting ABB Alstom Power's cost base by 30% over the next three years.

ABB Alstom Power was formed last year when Zurich-based ABB merged its power generation business in a 50-50 deal with French group Alstom (ALS).

ABB Alstom Power employs 54,000 people in more than 100 countries. The job losses represent 18.5% of its global worforce.

In its statement, the company said the restructuring was necesary to adapt to a shift in the power market away from traditional steam-related markets.

"Traditional steam-related markets have decreased in volume - down 30% in the past three years - and large manufacturing over-capacity has fueled a fall in prices - down over 50% in the last five years," said the company.

The restructuring, it said, is designed to "position ABB Alstom Power as the most competitive power generation solutions provider".

In the statement, Darmon pledged steps to "minimize the social consquences" of ABB Alstom Power's lay-off program.

"Every effort will be made to find solutions for each employee affected by the restructuring program," he said.

ABB Alstom Power was officially created in July last year.

For those who may not be aware, I believe ALA still owns 25% of Alstom, a large scale global engineering firm they spun off years ago. Sounds like Alstom power is a subsidary of Alstom? If anyone knows otherwise please correct me.

Bob, I still have not witnessed this price discrepancy (shocked I never noticed this before) but am sure you folks are correct and suspect I have the answer. CNBC just commented that the EURO traded as low as 93 cents yesterday. Apparently an 6 point range in the Euro over 24 hours, sooo, I would imagine whatever gap between US/Paris is a currency buffer. That's probably why I never noticed this gap. It has likely developed slowly since the Euro came about.
