Scandinavian Trio In Overdrive By Vanessa Clark, Total Telecom 28 February 2000 Ericsson, Telia and Volvo have shifted up a gear by forming WirelessCar, which will design and implement mobile solutions for cars and other vehicles. The company will develop services aimed at both the corporate and consumer market, but with the main focus on the big manufacturers of commercial fleets. The venture will be equally owned by each parent, but the president of the new company, Jan Hellaker, was at pains to stress that it will act "at arm's length from the parents". It intends to sell its products and services to other manufacturers and operators, which can then brand the products as their own. WirelessCar will handle the installation and billing of the systems. Initial products will focus on safety-related services such as road side assistance, said Hellaker. The company also plans services such as remote diagnostics, Internet and email access, and vehicle software management. For now, the products will use GSM as the wireless technology linking the vehicles, but Hellaker said the company is eyeing the U.S. for expansion and will use technology relevant to its markets.
