I would say that - The market in general and the momentum stocks in the extreme particular is based on Liquidity and mkt(players) phychology.

For momentum playing, the key is to attract as many players as possible(for the liquidity) at moments notice. So noise(psychology) is abosolutely necessary. Long and short are both players(liquidity).
