Bush has consistently refused to say he has never taken drugs. He must know that this confirms suspicions that he was a heavy drug user before his implicit dates of oblivion. I conclude, reasonably I believe, that he is a rational man who does not want to be caught in a public lie. He would rather face suspicion rather than admit that he had committed crimes for which people are imprisoned for life in Texas.
I will be perfectly willing to accept his unhedged statement that he has never used drugs, sold drugs, smuggled drugs. I will never believe him until he says one way or the other.
As a young man, I believe he has said that he was almost an alcoholic (I think this is a hedge), and a rascal. I think he was a business failure, rescued by his father's rich friends. I believe he was a member of a German influenced anti-Christian satanic cult at Yale (Skull and Bones). Some people say S&B is just a joke. Some people think the idea that such an aristocratic young man would deal drugs is just a joke. It well may be. I just want a straight out denial of drug use and drug dealing.
Personally, I don't mind anyone using drugs, but it's not for amateurs. I think people deserve privacy. But anyone with a smirk like Bush wears on his face really ought to tell the truth.
