COMPUTER prices are finally slated to fall, but not significantly. Mr Sinha has lowered import duty rates on computers and their components by up to 5 per cent.....

On the critical components, like storage devices, microprocessors, integrated circuits and colour data graphic displays, the duty is down from five percent to zero....

Said Neelam Dhawan, director (Marketing), Compaq: "The new tax rates of zero per cent on critical components would enable India to become a global hub for components like Malaysia and Singapore."

This would also promote Just in Time manufacturing as manufacturers would not have to stock components.'

"The domestic industry will benefit and the grey market will take a beating. Branded products and PCs would increase thereby helping the exchequers also. The finance minister has given a warning signal to the grey market dealers," said Sharad Talwar, company spokesperson, HCL Infosystems.
