Setting the Record Straight -- Shasta 5000 BSN Achieves 30% Plus Market Share inFirst Quarter of Shipments, Second Only to Redback Networks Wed Mar 01 10:03:00 EST 2000 SANTA CLARA, Calif., Mar 1, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Synergy Research Group's 1999 Broadband Access & Infrastructure Equipment Market Share Report issued February 23, 2000, cited market share data for various companies in the broadband aggregation/subscriber management equipment category. However, the report neglected to include any shipment data on Nortel Network's (NYSE/TSE:NT) Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node. The Shasta 5000 achieved extraordinary sales growth in Q4, 1999, the first quarter of general availability, based on its next generation aggregation and service enabling capabilities. While Nortel Networks does not normally break out unit revenues and shipments, even based on the Synergy Group's own total market numbers, the Shasta 5000 BSN actually would have won 30% of the market, second only to Redback Networks (NASDAQ:RBAK), whose market share, based on the actual market numbers, has dropped sharply to 37%, from more than 63% in Q2, 1999. Other industry analysts such as Infonetics Research cite the Shasta 5000 BSN market share as gaining significant momentum. According to Infonetics' report "The Service Provider Core and Edge Hardware Market Share Service," dated February 18th of this year, Nortel Network's Shasta 5000 BSN actually has a 36% market share based on Q4, 1999 revenues. For more information, visit Infonetics Research's web site at infonetics.com Major recent wins for the Shasta 5000 BSN include Qwest Communications, Telocity, Log On America, IJNT, NetDepot, @ Link, DSLnetworks, BroadbandNOW, Inc. (U.S.) EinsteiNet (Germany), Telia (Finland), Completel (France), and Tokyo Metallic (Japan). (Editors note: see release dated February 29, 2000, "Qwest Communications Selects Nortel Networks to Support Enhanced Internet Broadband Services.") "It is highly unfortunate that the Synergy Group did not include the market data for the Shasta 5000 BSN," said Anthony Alles, president and general manager of Nortel Networks Shasta IP Services Business Unit, "But it is particularly sad to see vendors citing what they must surely know to be wholly inaccurate statistics to paint a misleading picture of their true market share. The reality is that the Shasta 5000 BSN has achieved, and continues to build upon this year, a remarkable sales momentum, based not only on our next generation broadband aggregation capabilities, but the attraction to service providers around the world of our promise of a seamless migration from basic subscriber management to the network services that will drive the broadband business case."
