We put the Shah in power, but we had an excuse - the British told us we had to do it. They told us that Mossadegh was a communist (even though he wasn't), and we believed him because only a communist would object to having his country effectively ruled by the Anglo-Iranian Petroleum Company.

We did not remove the Shah from power; the Iranians did that. We refused to intervene to assist him, because such an operation would have almost certainly failed, and because in the aftermath of Vietnam it would have been unacceptable to the American populace.
